RJ Smith

RJ Smith is the author most recently of American Witness: The Art and Life of Robert Frank (Da Capo Press, 2017). His The One: The Life and Music of James Brown (Gotham Books) was one of the New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of 2012. The Great Black Way: L.A. in the 1940s and the Lost African American Renaissance won a California Book Award in 2006. He has written for Spin, Vibe, The Village Voice, The New York Times and Maggot Brain. Smith lives in Chicken Corner, California, and is currently working on You Never Can Tell, a biography of Chuck Berry, to be published by Da Capo Press in 2022.
