Y’all Better Listen: Queer Punctuations of Public Space During Crisis

This critical karaoke performance ruminates alongside three sound pieces accompanying artworks by queer Asian diasporic, Black, and Indigenous artists/poets/musicians/performers Art 25, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and alejandro t. Acierto; these projects were presented together as part of my curatorial project AFTER LIFE (we survive) at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. This exhibition, originally designed for indoor presentation on the 2nd floor galleries of YBCA, was “turned inside out” for free public viewing on the exterior of YBCA’s buildings; it ran between the November 2020 elections and the January 2021 inauguration date, and will live online in perpetuity. Listening alongside Art 25, Bhutto, and acierto, I am interested in the ways that their queer sounds punctuated this public space-- barely trafficked during the COVID19 pandemic except for unhoused folks who rest in the grass and Filipino immigrant men who play chess in the courtyard-- during this exceptional moment of societal crises. Listening queerly, I believe, attunes us to otherwise possibilities for living together and being in relation that can better realize our mutual and collective survival.
